Camp La-No-Che is the BSA Central Florida Chapter camping facility located just over an hour from Avalon Park in Paisley, Florida. The camp hosts several events each year for area Cub Scout Packs. Activities often include archery, slingshot, BB guns, arts and crafts, storytelling/skits, and of course a fun evening around the campfire. Families can stay for the weekend or stay for the day! Either way, it is always a lot of fun! Here are some FAQs about Pack 157's involvement at Camp La-No-Che:
You should expect fun times with friends while building memories to last a lifetime! That said, Camp La-No-Che is a rustic, volunteer-run Scout camping facility. There is running water and electricity throughout the campus. Each campsite has a covered pavilion with picnic tables. It is outdoors and in the woods. You may come across bugs, snakes, and other native wildlife including black bears and alligators. You should come to Camp La-No-Che prepared to spend the day outdoors and exposed to the elements. The days can be long and involve a lot of walking. A wagon or carrier is recommended for younger siblings (strollers don't do well in the sandy terrain).
No, you do not have to camp overnight in order to participate in the daytime activities at Camp La-No-Che. Most of the planned activities happen during the day. Keep in mind though, you'll need to leave East Orlando early. It takes almost 1.5 hours to get there from Avalon Park.
You'll need to bring a tent, bedding, and other camping gear for your family. Vehicles may not stay in the campsite after dark, so we recommend having some kind of moveable tote for your camping gear. There is electric at the campsites along with outdoor (very rustic) flush toilets and shower facilities. Below is a recommended checklist of camping items:
Tent
Sleeping bags/pads/bedding
Flashlights/ headlamps
Cooler with meals or snacks (depending on whether or not you get the meal plan)
Camp chairs
Extension cord (if using electronics)
Plenty of water
Sunscreen
Class B uniform (pack t-shirt and hat) for daytime activities
Comfortable shoes (sneakers or hiking shoes)
Backpack (for carrying craft projects, water, etc.)
If you've never camped before and want to try it out, please ask at our pack meeting about borrowing gear. Some of our families may have extras to loan you!
Yes, siblings are welcome to attend. But they will need to also register and pay the La-No-Che fees/waivers. Also, we recommend bringing some kind of entertainment for younger siblings (toddlers) who cannot participate in some of the planned activities.
Most events include an option for meal tickets at Camp La-No-Che. The meals are put together by Scouts and volunteers. The meals are served during set meal times and generally have one or two options to choose from. If you are picky or want something more than the basics, you have the option to bring your own meals. There are campfire rings at every campsite and electricity is available if you'd like to bring a camp stove. There is also a grill next to the camp store at La-No-Che where you can purchase snacks and food during the day.
Cub Halloween is historically the biggest La-No-Che event for our pack. Several families often camp overnight and many more come for the day. There are pumpkins, hayrides, haunted houses, carnival games, a costume contest, and many other spooky fun activities!
There are plenty of other La-No-Che opportunities throughout the year. For our youngest scouts, there's the LIGER Growl, a weekend set aside only for kindergarten and first graders.
In December, Santa comes to visit during the Cub Holidays event, which can also be a lot fun!
You really can't go wrong!
